Bethesda Country Day School of Bethesda, MD

Choosing the right preschool is a big decision. Naturally, you want a warm, welcoming place where your child feels safe and supported as they grow, learn, and build skills. As you look at your options, you might wonder how a Montessori program compares to a preschool like ours. While both programs support children’s growth and development, they structure the day, design the space, and guide children in different ways.

Let’s take a look at how Montessori schools and our preschool compare.

Where We Share Common Ground

Both programs recognize that young children are curious, capable learners. We both focus on the whole child, nurturing their academic, social, emotional, and physical growth.

In both settings, children:

• Build confidence and independence.
• Develop early reading, writing, and math skills.
• Practice making friends and solving problems.
• Strengthen fine and gross motor skills.
• Build self-help skills like dressing and cleaning up.
• Explore, create, and make choices every day.

Where Our Approaches Differ

Learning Experiences

In a Montessori classroom, children learn using materials designed to build one skill at a time. A teacher shows a child how to use an item, and then the child explores it on their own. Many of these tools are self-correcting, which lets children spot and fix their own mistakes naturally. This helps young learners build confidence as they practice tasks, master new challenges, and grow at their own pace.

Our Links to Learning curriculum takes a broader, connected approach centered on learning through play. We build theme-based learning centers around high-quality children’s books, creating a cohesive experience. One book can spark learning across the classroom, giving children opportunities to explore literacy, math, science, and creativity in ways that feel meaningful and fun.

For example, when reading Apples and Pumpkins by Anne Rockwell, our entire classroom reflects the story.

• Dramatic Play: The center becomes a farm stand where children practice social roles and teamwork.
• Science Center: Real cut pumpkins and apples are available for hands-on sensory exploration.
• Math Center: Children use tools to measure, count, and compare pumpkins and apples
• Literacy Center: Students draw pictures and write stories about a time they went apple picking.

Both classroom styles build independence and incorporate active learning. The main difference is how children experience it.

Pacing and the Rhythm of the Day

Montessori classrooms feature long, uninterrupted work blocks where children can spend extended time on activities of their choice. In our school, children choose the learning centers they’d like to visit. If a child is deeply focused, we may encourage them to keep exploring. At other times, we might gently invite them to share a material or try a new task, helping them build flexibility, patience, and strong social skills.

Classroom Environment and Setup

Montessori rooms favor neutral tones, natural wood, and a simple, calm, orderly design. Children are grouped across a three-year age span in one classroom. Because a child can be in the same classroom for 3 years, they may have the same teacher all three years.

Our classrooms are bright, warm, and filled with colorful displays that showcase your child’s work, creative expressions, and families. Children are grouped with same-age peers, and children typically stay with their teacher for about a year before moving up to the next classroom. Plus, as our books and themes are regularly changing, the room updates, too – keeping school new and exciting!

Children learn with peers their own age and typically stay in the same classroom for about a year before moving to the next one. As our books and themes change, the classroom changes, too. The Role of the Teacher

In a Montessori classroom, teachers act as guides. They observe children, introduce specific materials, show kids how to use them, and offer support as needed. A big part of their job is creating a space where children can work independently and follow their own interests.

Our preschool teachers also pay close attention to each child’s needs, but they take a more active role in guiding the day. They introduce new ideas, lead group talks and activities, work with small groups, and give one-on-one support when a child needs it. This gives your child a healthy mix of teacher-led learning, small group activities, and open play.

Finding the Right Fit for Your Child

Every child thrives in their own unique way! Some children enjoy the self-directed pace of a Montessori setting. Others thrive in a space that also promotes independence while offering more teacher guidance, group play, and new things to discover each day. The right fit is a place where your child feels safe, valued, and eager to learn.

When visiting schools, look for warm teacher connections, happy children, and a space that feels like a good match for your child’s personality.
